What? A 5km walk or run around the Conexus Arts Centre and back.

Who are we raising money for?
The Education Student's Society (ESS) is currently involved in a fundraising initiative geared towards reaching out to community schools in Regina. With this project we hope to raise enough money to help develop an outreach program for youth, which focuses on social skill development. We firmly believe that this program will significantly benefit the underprivileged youth in Regina by giving the opportunity to build and develop the social skills and confidence, necessary to be an active community member.

Participation Guidelines
- Teams can consist of 7-15 people
- Each member must collect a minimum of $20 in order to participate.
- Walk will begin at 2PM in the Education Lounge on September 30th.
- Your team will walk or run around the Conexus Arts Centre and back to the University. Please arrive a little early before the walk if you want to make posters for your team, as well as enter your names into the prize draws.
- Captains must hand in pledge money prior to the walk.
- Prizes will be given for the most original team name, best costumes, most money raised (team and individual). Random give-a-ways will almost be made.
- A pledge sheet is included in this booklet. Please give each of your team members a copy.
- Thank you for being a part of such a great cause. Have fun!

"Gangs in Schools" has been our most popular PD Event for the past two years. A constable from the Regina Police Services will be educating us on the gang situation in Regina including basic information, how to identify students who are at-risk, and how to help them.

For attending this event, you will receive a PD Certificate that you can add to your portfolio. By pre-registering you will receive the certificate the night of the event. Taking Science Outdoors! – Condie Nature Hike 2011

Are you interested in nature? Are you wondering of cool ways of integrating nature into your class? Well the Group of Undergraduate Education Science Students (G.U.E.S.S) has a solution for you!

On April 2nd, 2011 from 1pm-3pm, Nature Saskatchewan is hosting a Nature Hike out at Condie Nature Reserve (14 kilometers Northwest of Regina off HWY 11 at Exit A)! This is a professional development opportunity allows you to get out of the city and into nature, giving you unique ideas to incorporate nature into your classroom! Nature Saskatchewan is leading this hike and workshop and it will include the guided tour and certification.

Activities in the afternoon will include:
• Bird and plant Identification basics
• Outdoor packing reviews and planning ideas
• Nature Journaling/solo time.
• Hiking

"Teaching and Learning with Monarch Butterflies"

The powerful story of the Monarch Butterfly's 4000 km journey from Canada to Mexico each fall inspired the emergence of the Monarch Teacher Network (MTN). MTN is a growing network of Canadian, American and Mexican educators who are trained to bring the story of the Monarch Butterfly into their classrooms and communities. Monarchs can become a symbol to connect learning about the past, present and future of North America, its people and the land that sustains us all.

Taught by experienced volunteer educators, this intensive multi-day workshop combines hands-on activities, lectures, videos and group projects designed to inspire and teach participants ways to use Monarch Butterflies as a tool to make connections to all curricula.

Davis was most politically active during the late 1960s through the 1970s and was associated with the Communist Party USA, the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party. Prisoner rights have been among her continuing interest; she is the founder of "Critical Resistance", an organization working to abolish the prison-industrial complex. She is presently a retired professor with the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz and is the former director of the university's Feminist Studies department. The ESS is hosting an Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation (STF) Information Night that is free for all education students.

This Thursday night, March 10th, 2011 at 7:00pm the ESS is happy to have STF representatives give a presentation on what the STF is, what they do for future teachers and answer any questions that students may have. This event comes with a PD certificate for portfolios, and allows students to ask any questions they may have about the STF.

The event will be hosted in ED 191 at 7:00pm, March 10th, 2011 (Thursday).

Nominations forms can be found on the bulletin board just outside the ed lounge (ED189) in an envelope. Forms are due on March 18, 2011. Please place them in the box on the desk inside the ed lounge labelled 'Election Forms'.

Available positions are as follows, as stated in the Constitution. Executive positions are only available to students who have already served on the ESS for at least one year and are not during their internship year. Council positions are open to anyone.

What is it: Come hear about different experiences from a number of education students who just finished their internship semester. There will be experiences from urban, rural, and international settings, as well as from secondary, early childhood, and elementary focuses. In addition to the intern speakers, we will also hear from a cooperating teacher and a first year teacher who will discuss their experiences with the internship program and how it prepared them for their first year of teaching. There will also be a question period at the end of the night.

We are delighted to offer what will be a lively discussion about teaching and large classrooms. We'll introduce some of the new innovations - such as inter-teaching, group processes, and using online tools to engage students and guide their work.

But what we're most excited about is an opportunity to hear from Alison Hayford (both sessions) and Heather Ryan (3:30pm session only), each of whom has a lifetime of experience and knowledge about teaching. They will remind us about some of the basic foundations of teaching - and perhaps stimulate a debate about just how far we should go with some of the new and innovative ideas.

You're sure to pick up a few new ideas, and we can benefit from borrowing some of yours! Food will be served, so please RSVP by February 7 to the TDC (tdc@uregina.ca or 585-5285) to reserve your spot!

TLt 2011 Conference - Teaching and Learning to the Power of technology

We hope that you would consider setting aside the evening of Tuesday June 14th, 2011 and all day on Wednesday, June 15th to come to Saskatoon to participate in TLt 2011!

TLt is a conference about teaching and learning with (and to) the power of technology, about using appropriate technologies to add value to the learning environment, about innovative uses of technology to engage students, about how to consider the use of technology for students who face learning challenges, and much more.

TLt also focuses on the various modes of delivery: online; face-to-face (with technology being used to supplement the face-to-face experience); videoconference and televised teaching and learning; and blended learning (where portions of the course are intentionally delivered through a blend of synchronous and asynchronous technologies).

This year we have invited Dr. Norm Vaughan of Mount Royal University in Calgary to be our keynote speaker. Norm is an engaging and inviting speaker who will talk to us about how to re-conceptualize and re-design our teaching, question our current approaches, and consider appropriate ways to integrate technology into our teaching and learning in face-to-face and blended environments.

We invite and will be accepting Calls for Proposals until midnight of February 28th, 2011.

This year's conference, which will begin in the evening of Tuesday, June 14th, 2011 and last all day on Wednesday, June 15th, 2011, is being held at the University of Saskatchewan, organized and sponsored by the University of Regina. Check out www.tlt2011.ca for more information and to register!

The adidas University challenge is a bracket-style competition between 19 Canadian universities that are adidas partners. Students vote for their school and the winning school will receive $25,000 for their athletic department.

In the first round, 16 schools with the most votes as a percentage of their student population will advance. Each subsequent week, your school will go head-to-head with another university. The school with ...the most votes as a percentage of their student population will advance to the next round. The process continues each week until only one school is left standing.

The next week, the remaining 8 teams will be matched up head-to-head and so on. This will continue each week/round until one school remains. That school will receive the $25,000 donation to their athletic department.

New Science Elective for Non-Science Majors BIO223

I would like to bring to your attention a new course that may be of interest to you. I am excited to offer a new Biology Course-BIOL223, this winter (2011) that is directed towards non-biology and also non-science majors.

Based on campus activities, students are clearly interested in environmental issues and possible solutions to mitigate human impacts on the environment. It can be difficult to separate the rhetoric from the science when it comes to possible solutions for mitigating environmental impacts. The new course is tailored to introduce non-science majors to the importance of microbes in society.

Microbes are critical to the proper function of the biosphere, and microbiology can be used to introduce non-majors students to the science behind many environmental issues facing society. Students will develop critical thinking skills for evaluating the environmental issues to help separate the rhetoric from the facts.

Child Day - Nov 20

Canada's "Child Day" is held on November 20 each year as enacted in the 1993 Parliamentary Bill C-27.7, the Child Day Act.

Canada became a signatory to the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Child (CRC) on May 28th, 1990 and ratified the Convention on December 13th, 1991.

In 1989 a unanimous House of Commons resolution passed to end child poverty in Canada by the year 2000. Yet today, depending upon whose statistics one refers to, between 10 to 15 percent of children still live in poverty.

Of all the countries participating in the OECD Early Learning and Care review in 2003, Canada scored amongst the lowest. Furthermore, the report noted, with the exception of Quebec, Early Learning and Care in Canada is characterized by "a patchwork of uneconomic, fragmented services, within which a small *child care* sector is seen as a labour market support, often without a focussed child development and education role".

A UNICEF report released in December 2008, *The child care transition, Innocenti Report Card 8* on early childhood care and education ranked Canada last among 25 developed nations. Canada met only one of the 10 benchmarks of quality and access proposed in the report as the minimum standard for protecting the rights of children in the early years.

The Western Development Museum - Moose Jaw is offering a teachers information night on September 16. Here is an invitation. I would appreciate it if you would forward it to all your teachers. I think that the Museum offers a number of programs that can support their class work.

David Roman is the Aboriginal Leadership Coordinator at the YMCA of Regina. He is in charge of a free tutoring program offered to students 5-12, G.E.D. and E.S.L. at the downtown YMCA. We are currently looking for volunteer tutors to help out minimum of one hour a week. We have quite a large demand for tutors so we are taking people who are proficient in any subject area. This might be a good chance for Education students to get some hands on experience in the community with a variety of different students. We only ask for one hour a week, however if someone is so inclined to do more they can as well.

We would like to introduce the new Group of Undergraduate Education Science Students or G.U.E.S.S.!! This student group was developed by this years 4th Year Science Education students and has been registered with URSU as an official student group.

To celebrate this joining, there will be a meet and greet on April 15th. It will be held in ED320 at starts at 3:00pm. Note that G.U.E.S.S. is open to more than just science majors: anyone who will possibly teach science in their classrooms (including science minors, elementary, and anyone else interested) is more than welcome.

The meeting will be a discussion of what the group is about, what they provide for science education students, meeting the current G.U.E.S.S. members, and possibly touring our science labs. We will have snacks and non-alcoholic beverages and might even have scientific goodies out for people to see.

What: Schools for Sudan Walk-A-Thon

When: Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 Your team can start the walk at 12:30 or 4:30 (You decide which time works best for you).

Where: Teams of 10-15 people will meet in Riddell Centre and participate in a 5K walk or run around Wascana Park

Who we are raising money for: School’s for Sudan is an ongoing project that the ESS has taken on to work towards raising enough money to build a school for underprivileged children in Sudan.

Prizes will be awarded!

Get your friends, section, or subject area together to help raise money for this great cause! Last year we raised over $6000.00! Let's beat that this year and make a difference in children's lives! If you cannot participate in the walk, you can make donations at our table in Riddell the day of the walk.

Christine Selinger Cabaret Fundraiser

Christine Selinger, last year's co-president of the ESS is currently in my fifth of six years in the combined B.Ed/B.Sci program at the U of R. She is also a paraplegic - and as many of you know she will be the first paraplegic to hike BC's Nootka Trail in May of this year. Unfortunately, this hike is costing a lot of money - and so she is holding fundraisers! The first fundraiser was a steak night that went great and raised nearly $2000!!

The next event is a cabaret:

PD Event Change

Originally, we had the PD Event "Treaty Kits with Susan Beadin" at scheduled on February 24, 2010. Due to scheduling conflicts, we are replacing this PD Event with "Life as an Intern". We are still going to have the Treaty Kit PD Event, but the date is TBA. Here's some information on "Life as an Intern":

February 24 at 7pm
Teacher Prep Center, 2cd floor Ed Building
Approximately five education students who completed their internship this fall will be in attendance. They are there to talk about their experiences and answer questions. There will be as wide of variety of interns as possible (ie; ECE, Middle Years, BAC, Arts Ed, etc.)

Pre-registration is not necessary, just show up! You will receive a certificate to put in your porfolio. Stay tuned for updates on the Treaty Kit event!

Christine Selinger Fundraiser

Christine Selinger, former president of the ESS, is going to hike BC's Nootka Trail in May of this year. This trail is quite treacherous, and is cut off from civilization. It's on Nootka Island, off the west coast of Vancouver Island; this island is inhabited by a lot of wildlife including bears and wolves, but few people reside on the island. The hike takes approximately five days for the average able-bodied hiker, so my team and I are estimating that it will take us around 8 days to complete with my hand cycle. We have to carry in (and out) all of our equipment including tents, food and garments. Because we are doing this in May, we are predicting very wet weather, thus making this trip even trickier.

This trek is incredibly exciting, as very few people with physical disabilities participate in backcountry activities, and I am believed to be the first paraplegic to hike this trail. As part of our team we have a photographer/ videographer who will be helping us to compile a documentary about the experience once we've completed it!! In order to do this trek, though, I need to purchase or build an all- terrain hand cycle. This is where I am need of the most assistance. First of all, if you, or someone you know, is willing to help me build this cycle that would be greatly appreciated. Due to the fact that this cycle will cost approximately $4000 - $5000 (build or bought), I am hosting a Steak Night to raise funds for this. Here are the details:

As you know, we have been renovating the ED Lounge so it will not only look better, but be a more useful space (including a kitchen area). It has come to our attention, however, that the last time the space was redone that things were done incorrectly, including fixing the walls. Therefore, the renovations are to continue indefinitely until everything is fixed properly. We will continue to update you on the progress - we miss the lounge already too! Thanks and we're very sorry for any inconvenience.

Arts Education Gala & Silent Auction

The 4th year Arts Education students at the University of Regina invite you to experience their annual gala and silent auction. Come enjoy a blend of artistic presentations from the students and artists in our community! There is something for everyone to enjoy, including dance, music, drama, and visual art.

Full performances will take place both Friday and Saturday night with door prizes, silent auction items, and bake sale items at both shows. Please support us in our artistic endeavors!
